Our Beliefs
The Hampton Roads Cool Communities Coalition (HR3C) is a volunteer-based organization created in mid 2008 as a result of a shared concern among local citizens who recognize that the scientific community has reached a consensus on the issue of global warming. Specifically:- Global warming is real and is largely due to man-made activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels
- The impact of an increasingly warming planet is significant and potentially dire as ice caps melt, sea levels rise, ocean salinity increases, and plant and animal species diminish or become extinct as a result
- Mankind will not escape the affects of a warming planet as drinkable water supplies decrease while the intensity of storms and draughts increase, potentially affecting our economy and even our food supply
- Time is not on our side, as the longer we delay in taking serious action to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions the more difficult it will be for us to avoid the more significant effects of a warming planet
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), Hampton Roads is second only to New OrleansĀ in terms of urban centers at greatest risk from sea-level rise.
Consequently, our mission is to help our Hampton Roads governments and communities gain momentum in reducing their city/county emissions by becoming a knowledgeable resource dedicated to helping our local communities reduce their carbon footprint as quickly and effectively as possible through the use of proven, cost-effective greenhouse gas reduction strategies.
While global-warming is a serious problem that requires a world-wide solution, we know that here in Hampton Roads, working together we can do our part.
