About Us

HR3C is a grassroots organization whose founding members came together in the Summer of 2008.  Randie Trestrail and Ken Ricklin, co-chairs of HR3C, met while attending a meeting of the Williamsburg Climate Action Network (WCAN).  Deeply concerned about climate change and wanting to make a difference on a local level, Randie and Ken volunteered to work together, and contact their home town local governments of Hampton and Poquoson with the intention of encouraging their elected leaders to make a commitment to beginning the work of measuring, reducing, and monitoring greenhouse gas emissions.

Within a few weeks, the first formal meeting of the Hampton Roads Cool Communities Coalition came to order at the Poquoson Public Library.  In time, the core membership of HR3C solidified, and now includes members of other local environmental groups that share a passion for winning the battle against climate change.

Our Mission

Simply put, our mission is to help the local governments, businesses and communities of the Tidewater region make significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  Please see Our Mission statement page for more detail.

Our Beliefs

We see climate change as the one of the most challenging and most important issues of our times.  We believe that climate change/global warming is underway, the science supporting the climate change scenario to be accurate, and the need for quick action legitimate.  Please see Our Beliefs page for more.

Advisory Board

The primary purpose of the HR3C Advisory Board is to ensure that our organization remains true to it's mission and to guide us toward the most efective use our resources.  Diversification of the board is very important, as we seek the perspecitve of those who not only understand the science driving local climate change but also the potential impact on our daily lives from rising sea-levels.  To read about our board members, please see our Advisory Board page.
